Event Agenda Opening Reception and Artist welcoming - 10AM - 11AM Family Short Film Program - 11AM - 12 Noon Families are welcome to our first collection of short films that feature stories which range from a Sikh boy who idolizes Elvis to an animated movie about a little girl who befriends a lost bird. These movies, both animated and live action, will educate and entertain audiences young and old. Films featured in the Family Short Film Program: - My Pet (Philippines) Directed by Anna Bigornia. A story of a girl and her pet chick.
- Arjuna (USA) Directed by Arjun Rihan. A young prince discovers his destiny.
- Sikh, Rattle & Roll (UK) Directed by Ekta Walia. As Jasbir is coming of age, he worries about how he is to undergo his turban tying ceremony while idolizing Elvis.
- Horn Ok Please (UK) Directed by Joel Simon. A day in the life of Lucky, a taxi driver in India.
- Hungu (Canada) Directed by Nicolas Brault. Under the African sun, a mother's soul resurrected by music will return strength and life to her child.
- Kuna Ni Nanang (My Mother Said) (USA) Directed by Jessica Sison. Meet Elena Bautista, 99 years...YOUNG.
Lunch - 12 Noon Santa Mesa (Philippines/USA) Directed by Ron Morales - 1PM-2:30 PM. Following his mother's death, Hector arrives in Manila to live with his grandmother. Unable to speak Tagalog, Hector falls in with a street gang before a photographer takes him under his wing. Haunted by memories of his mother, Hector photographs an anonymous woman when, suddenly, these seemingly disconnected lives collide. Director Ron Morales will be in attendance to present the film and participate in a Q&A following the screening. Heritage Short Film Program - 3:30PM-4:30PM Our second collection of short films brings many issues and cultures to the screen, starting with a comedy about three men crossing the border and continuing with a Hmong family dealing with a new reality. The Heritage Short Film Program features movies made by filmmakers of different backgrounds but who present issues and visuals that appeal to everyone. Films featured in the Heritage Short Film Program: - El Regalo (The Gift) - (USA) Directed by Stuart Altman. A Homeric Comedy/Adventure told through the eyes of three Mexican immigrants.
- Second Mother (USA) Directed by Abel Vang. A Hmong family must deal with a new reality in their daily lives.
- Eclipse (Australia/India) Directed by Mark Lapwood. A visually-based journey through Mumbai, contrasting portraits of people who live in the streets with the natural beauty that surrounds them.
- Chiles (USA) Directed by Tyrone Huff. A comedic story of a young African American meeting his future in-laws and the troubles that happen with language barriers, cultural differences, and a bowl of chiles.
- The Heart is a Hidden Camera (USA) Directed by Gabriel Judet-Weinshel. A magic-realist short about remaining emotionally vulnerable amid the ravages of the 21st Century.
- Narmeen (India) Directed by Dipti Gogna. During the partition of India, a young Muslim mother tries to cope with the loss of her child by befriending a little Sikh boy.
Slingshot Hip Hop (Palestine/USA) Directed by Jackie Salloum - 5PM-6:30PM. Slingshot Hip Hop tells the stories of young Palestinians living in Gaza, the West Bank, and inside Israel as they discover Hip Hop and employ it as a tool to surmount divisions imposed by occupation and poverty. Director Jackie Salloum and artists Abeer and Mohammed will be in attendance to present the film and participate in a Q&A following the screening. Companion Short film: - Among B-Boys (USA) Directed by Christopher Woon. A documentary about the widespread and lasting phenomena of breakdancing among the Hmong American community in Merced County.
